Overview

Turn a Slope Into Square Footage

A lot of properties around Ventura County come with grade β€” a backyard that climbs into the foothills, a side yard that drops off toward the street, a pad cut into a hillside. That slope is either a problem or an opportunity, and the difference is a well-built retaining wall. Done right, a wall holds the soil where it belongs and carves a steep, unusable bank into level terraces you can plant, pave, or set a patio on.

It's also about protection. Our rainy season tends to come in short, heavy bursts, and dry hillside soil sheds water fast β€” that's how you end up with eroded beds, undercut foundations, and mud sliding toward the house. A retaining wall with the right drainage behind it controls where that water goes and keeps your slope from creeping downhill every winter.

At Ventura Landscape & Design, we build segmental block walls, natural stone walls, and poured concrete walls β€” and we choose the system to fit the height, the soil, and the look you want. Lower garden and seat walls go in clean and fast; taller structural walls get proper footings, reinforcement, and engineering when the situation calls for it. Either way, what you can't see β€” the gravel backfill, the drainage, the compacted base β€” is what makes the wall last.

How It Works

Our Retaining Wall Process

🌿

Site & Slope Evaluation

We assess the grade, soil, and water flow, then recommend the right wall type and height β€” and flag whether engineering is needed.

Design & Material Selection

We help you choose block, natural stone, or concrete to match your home, and lay out terraces and seat walls where they add value.

Base, Drainage & Build

We dig and compact a solid base, set the wall course by course, and build in gravel backfill and drain pipe behind it.

Backfill, Finish & Cleanup

We backfill, cap the wall, grade the new terrace, and leave the site clean and ready for planting or hardscape.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

🌿
How much does a retaining wall cost?

Pricing usually runs by the square foot of wall face, and it varies with the material, the height, the access, and the soil. A short segmental block garden wall is far less than a tall engineered wall with footings and reinforcement. After we look at your slope and drainage, we'll give you a clear free estimate so there are no surprises.

Do I need a permit or engineering for my wall?

In most Ventura County jurisdictions, walls over roughly four feet (or walls carrying a surcharge load) require a permit and engineered plans. Lower garden and seat walls usually don't. We'll tell you which category your project falls into and coordinate the engineering and permitting when it's required.

Why does drainage behind the wall matter so much?

Water is what kills retaining walls. If rain saturates the soil behind a wall with nowhere to drain, the pressure builds until the wall leans, cracks, or fails. We build in gravel backfill and perforated drain pipe so water exits behind every wall β€” it's the difference between a wall that lasts decades and one that doesn't.

Which material should I choose β€” block, stone, or concrete?

Segmental block is versatile, cost-effective, and comes in many finishes. Natural stone gives a high-end, organic look that suits Ojai and foothill properties. Poured concrete is great for clean modern lines and tight spaces. We'll match the material to your height needs, soil, budget, and the style of your home.

How long will a retaining wall last?

A wall built on a compacted base with proper drainage and quality materials should last for decades β€” often the life of the home. The walls that fail early are almost always the ones built without drainage or a real foundation. We build for the long term, not the quick job.
